First John is a letter written by the apostle John to a church in Ephesus approximately 30 to 60 years after the resurrection of Christ. John was one of Jesus’ closest disciples and is known as the “disciple Jesus loved,” which is why he’s often called John the Beloved. First John is one of three letters we have preserved from him, and it is the longest of the three. This letter is very straightforward, with discussions about following Christ’s example, imagery of light and darkness, and guidance for how to love others as Christ has loved us.
