The Beatitudes – The Peacemakers

We are continuing our look into the Beatitudes in Matthew Chapter 5. Today, we are nearing the end of the list, as we study verse nine, which says, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.”

The focus for us in this verse is the word “peacemakers.” It’s important that we first understand the word “peace” as Jesus means it (not as the world teaches it). There is a big difference between what the world thinks peace is and what Jesus knows peace is. The Bible emphasizes that difference in John 14:27, when Jesus says, “Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives…” (emphasis added).

When we talk about making peace here in this Beatitude, we are not talking about avoiding conflict or stopping arguments between other people. We are not talking about politicians who try to get countries to lay down their arms and coexist without harming their neighbors. While those can all be good things, that’s not the kind of peace Jesus is talking about.

Jesus is talking about a spiritual peace that exists within Believers—so good and powerful that it is beyond all understanding. It is a peace that guards our hearts and minds, even when the world around us is in turmoil (see Philippians 4:7). It is a peace that only comes from a right relationship with God.

So when Jesus calls His disciples to be peacemakers, He isn’t asking them to avoid conflict or to stop people and nations from fighting. He is calling His disciples into ministry—to bring others to God so they can be filled with the Holy Spirit and experience the peace that passes all understanding (see 2 Corinthians 5:18). He is asking us to help others initiate a new and healed relationship with God the Father, knowing full well that as children of God, they will have a peace the world cannot offer them. This is precisely what Jesus did Himself. He is the ultimate peacemaker (see Colossians 1:19–20 and Romans 5:1), and He is calling us to follow in His footsteps—just like a Father would ask his child to take on the family business.

All Believers are called children of God. And if we do well as we grow to behave more and more like Him, leading people to Him and thus giving them peace, He will bless us by calling us “sons” and “daughters.” This title signifies that we are not only in God’s family but are also being matured and transformed to be more like Him.

He is calling His disciples into ministry—to bring others to God so they can be filled with the Holy Spirit and experience the peace that passes all understanding.

So this Beatitude, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God,” can be summed up like this: If you are a child of God, who is actively trying to lead others to a saving relationship with God that brings them true peace, then you will have the blessing of being called a “son of God.” Remember, when you see the word peacemaker, it is so much more than avoiding or stopping conflicts; it is bringing people to God so they can have true internal, spiritual peace that surpasses all understanding in the midst of all the chaos in this world.
