Promises of God’s Love, Presence, and Peace at Christmas

We have been sharing some of God’s promises over the past few weeks. Today, as we celebrate Christmas, we get to see many of God’s promises fulfilled through the birth of Jesus Christ.

First is the promise of God’s love. The Bible shows us that God loves us with the greatest love. He loves us so much that He came to earth as a human (even though He is God). He lived alongside us. He knows what it is like to live a human life. He lived it perfectly, without sin. And then, ultimately, He displayed the greatest love any man can show—He gave up his life for ours by dying on the cross to save us from sin and give us eternal life (John 3:16; 15:13). God’s promise of a great and everlasting love for His children is evident when we look at the birth of Jesus Christ.

The Prince of Peace is another one of Jesus’ titles. He came as the Son of God to bring us peace.

His promise to never leave us is evident at Christmas as well. During this season, we are likely to see Isaiah 7:14 or Matthew 1:23 on cards and decor. It says ”the virgin [Mary] will become pregnant, and give birth to a son, and they will name him Immanuel, which is translated ‘God is with us.’” Immanuel is not Jesus’ given name, but it is a name that signifies an important aspect of His divine nature: it expresses the idea that God is with us. He is personally present with each of His children. Immanuel—God with us—is a name that reminds us that He will never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). Even if a physical human body, such as Jesus had when He came and walked on earth, is not here, we still have His Spirit with us—always. Jesus promised to stay with Believers always, even to the end of the age (Matthew 28:30). We have His constant presence and support in our lives, and we are reminded of that today.

This brings us to one more promise we can remember as we celebrate Jesus’ birth. It is the promise of peace. The Prince of Peace is another one of Jesus’ titles. He came as the Son of God to bring us peace. Now, peace does not mean that we will not have conflict. In fact, the Bible assures us that we will have conflict in this life (and that He will help us through it). But, what this peace does mean is that we have peace with God (see John 14:27). Where there was once hostility and separation from God because of our sins, there is now healing and wholeness because of our faith in Jesus. We have internal peace because of the reconciled relationship with God. Jesus’ birth reminds us of the peace we have because of His death and ultimate resurrection.

As you celebrate Christ’s birth today, be reminded of God’s love, God’s presence, and God’s peace.

We wish you all a very merry Christmas.
