Have you ever been told to trust in God’s promises? Do you remember being told, when things in life are tough, to just remember what God has said and promised? And that God will fulfill His promises, like the Bible says in Numbers 23:19? There is a lot of talk in the Christian community about the promises of God. And that can do two things: it can leave us encouraged, and it can leave us with questions.
The Bible is full of promises from God, and the best way to get to know those promises is to spend time reading your Bible and talking to God.
I remember thinking, “Well, what ARE the promises of God? And how do I lean on them if I don’t know what they are?” If you have those same questions, we hope to give you some answers. Over the next several weeks, we will be talking about some of the promises God has made to His people—the things that He has said that can provide us with strength and peace in the midst of our circumstances. Some of those promises require us to do something—like believe and obey—they are conditional promises. But others are unconditional and don’t depend on us at all—they are just there for us because of the goodness of God. Hopefully, by the end of this series, you will have knowledge of some of God’s promises that will leave you encouraged and strengthened. Know that this is just a small sample; the Bible is full of promises from God, and the best way to get to know those promises is to spend time reading your Bible and talking to God.
The first promise we are going to talk about is a beautiful promise to those who believe in God: that God’s love never ends, and it will never fail. In Jeremiah 31:3, God tells His people, “I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore, I have continued to extend faithful love to you.” And look at what great love the Father has given us—He has even called us His children (1 John 3:1)! He even sent His own Son to die in our place. There is no greater love than that—than to lay down your life for your friend (John 15:13).
And you may have accepted and believed that God has done all of that for you. But then, when you are struggling or feel like you have failed or are humiliated by something, you may be wondering about how far God’s love really goes. We encourage you to read Psalm 136 today, where literally every other line repeats that “His faithful love endures forever!”
His faithful love endures forever. He leads His people through the wild, unknown areas of life—in verse 16, the Bible calls it “the wilderness.” It says, “He led his people in the wilderness.
‘His faithful love endures forever.’” It says in that chapter that He gave us an inheritance, remembered us in our humiliation, rescued us from our foes, and more—because His faithful love endures forever.
And remember what He told us about His love: love is patient and kind, it does not keep a record of wrongs, and it endures all things. His love finds no joy in unrighteousness, but it does rejoice in the truth. So you can go to God and tell Him the truth of every feeling, thought, and situation—He knows it all anyway, and He rejoices in the truth (see 1 Corinthians 13:4–8). Know that you can approach Him with thanks and gratitude, because His love for you, His children, never ends and it never fails!
