Day 39 | The Second Miraculous Catch

Read John 21:4-11

The second miraculous catch, sometimes referred to as the “catch of the 153 fish,” was the final miracle Jesus would perform. Jesus had just been resurrected, and I’m sure Peter and the other disciples were feeling a broad range of emotions. I can imagine fishing would be somewhat of an escape from all that they had been feeling. However, they had fished all night and hadn’t caught anything until Jesus shows up.

Jesus instructs them to cast their nets on the opposite side, and although they can’t immediately identify the man on the shore, they still obey and haul in 153 fish without a single net breaking. Peter is now convinced he knows the voice and jumps off the boat to meet Jesus onshore. This second miraculous catch is significant because it took a blind act of obedience for Jesus to pour out a blessing. They had to trust and obey even when they couldn’t see their Savior standing right in front of them.

How many times in our walk as “believers” have we struggled with blind faith? We fall victim to a faith crisis. In our hearts, we believe that God will fulfill every promise He has given us, but we struggle with the things we can’t see. Our human eyes can’t catch up to our spiritual eyes. Hebrews 11:1 says faith shows us the reality of what we hope for. It is the evidence of things we cannot see. We have to remind ourselves that God’s ways are not our ways, and if we could figure out the path to our victory, we probably wouldn’t need Him. That’s where
trust and surrender come in. Those are the two keys required for blind faith in our Creator, expressed in obedience. We all have our prayers or “nets” in our life we cast daily. Maybe yours is a physical healing, restoration in your marriage, or possibly a spiritual breakthrough. Whatever your “net” is, perhaps you’ve been casting on your terms and not trusting God’s plan. Let’s trust and obey and learn to cast on the other side of the boat.
