Day 4 | Manna From Heaven

Read Exodus 16:14-36

The Lord’s provision comes in many forms, but on that day in the wilderness, the Israelites received not only provision for their physical needs but also their spiritual needs. When God spoke to Moses, He told him His plan of provision: that the people of Israel would receive everything they needed from God, nothing more and nothing less. Manna fell from heaven, giving each person exactly what they needed for that day. On the sixth day a double portion of manna fell so they could rest on the seventh day, the Sabbath. Although God’s plan of provision for His people was perfect, their hearts desired more than He gave them.

Through this passage in Exodus, we see just how good and faithful God is in all things. The Israelites knew God’s heart and character yet still chose to store up more than what they needed, showing the distrust they had in their hearts. When they went to collect manna on the seventh day, they found nothing and were confused. They forgot the Lord’s covenant and faithfulness, and He said to them, “How long will you refuse to keep my commands and instructions?” God gave us the Sabbath for a reason. He knows how much we need to rest from day-to-day work and worries, and precisely what it takes to restore us.

It’s easy to look at the Israelites and think, “Wow, how could they miss what God is saying to them? How could they not trust on the seventh day, when they trusted Him for the six days before that?”, but how often do we do that in our everyday lives? When things get difficult, we forget just how faithful God has been and all He has provided for us. When we take time to rest in the Lord and His word, we’re renewed and refreshed. We’re reminded of His good and faithful character – that we can trust Him for all that we need because who He is and what He’s done and will do for us never changes.
