    Sin Spread to People

Adam and Eve had two sons, Cain and Abel. One day, they both gave an offering to God. Cain was a farmer, so he gave some of his produce. Abel was a shepherd, and he gave God one of the firstborn of his sheep. God accepted Abel’s offering, but not Cain’s.

Cain became furious and jealous. God talked to Cain and told him to be careful of his anger. Anger can turn into sin. God warned Cain to control his sin and not let his sin control him. But Cain did not listen to God’s warning. Cain invited Abel into the field and killed him. Cain allowed his anger and jealousy to take over his heart and turn into sin. Cain let sin control him.

God asked Cain about his brother. Cain lied to God. Cain said he didn’t know where to find Abel. Let’s think about this for a minute. Did God really not know where Abel was or what happened to him? Of course, God knew what had happened. God was trying to give Cain a chance to confess his sin. But Cain continued to let sin control him. Cain lied to God and tried to cover up his previous sin. God punished Cain for his sin. God must punish sin because God is so holy and righteous.

But even in his punishment, God showed love and mercy to Cain. God put a mark on Cain so that he would be protected. God gave Adam and Eve another son. Adam and Eve’s family grew through Seth and his family. Seth’s family followed God.

    BIBLE PASSAGE: Genesis 4-5
    KEY PASSAGE: Romans 3:23
BIG PICTURE QUESTION: What does it mean to sin? To sin is to think, speak, or behave in any way that goes against God and His commands.
CHRIST CONNECTION: Adam and Eve’s sin and its consequences spread to all of their descendants. But God did not forget His promise to send a Rescuer. At just the right time, God would send His Son to save sinners.
